I have been reading about increasing the number of followers on twitter here and there, ever since the twitter has exploded with the popularity, people, especially bloggers have gone crazy to increase their following by using both ethical and unethical ways.

I don’t know what works, because I haven’t really found one, I can tell you what doesn’t work, because it haven’t worked for me and for many other people. If you are still trying to make it work, here are few things you should skip and save your time.

Follow random people expecting a follow back

I have seen many people of twitter who follow random people expecting they will get a follow back. They later unfollow them and repeat this all over again. This works for few people, but only for getting big numbers, this doesn’t increase your Impact at all.

Update as many tweets as you can

Yes, this again is something I have observed with so many accounts, thousands and thousands of updates while only a handful of people are following you. Number of tweets does not help you get a lot of followers.

Tweeting about your personal stuff

You love you Cat and you tweeted if, no one gives a damn until you are Aston Kutcher or Brad Pitt. You already have to be popular somewhere else before, so that people can follow you on twitter. Twitter is more text based social platform, you can only give links to your other online presence where you are a rockstar or make people fall in love with your Humorous tweets which is limited to 140 characters.

Consistency in Tweeting

Time is constant, there is a time when you feel like tweeting everything from morning to evening and then there are times when there is not a single update from your side for weeks. People forget you and consider you dead, and when you comeback, it only excites a few and others don’t give a damn about it. Be consistent, be regular, make people remember you.
